Carbon & Sulfur Analysis

Shiva Analyticals provides Carbon and Sulfur analysis to help monitor quantities in ores, soil, and different inorganic materials.

In the mining industry, ore is the raw material for iron and steel smelting. Knowing the carbon and sulfur contents in ore in advance can help to control the carbon and sulfur contents in the process of iron and steel making.

Carbon is the most important alloying element in steel and can be present up to 2%. An increased amount of carbon increases hardness, tensile strength, and hardenability, however, it also reduces the weldability properties of Steel. Also, Sulfur element is always present in steel in small quantities which gets introduced through iron ore and fuels like coal and coke. Sulfur is regarded as an impurity in steel and is required to be reduced to the limits of practicality. However, steels that are to be machined need a certain minimum Sulfur content for proper chip formation. In amounts exceeding 0.05%, it tends to cause brittleness and reduce weldability.

Measurement Range:

  • Carbon : 0.001% to 6.0%
  • Sulfur : 0.002% to 3.0 %

Detection Method: Non-Dispersive IR Absorbtion

Importance of Carbon & Sulfur Analysis by Industry

In the Machinery industry, there are very strict requirements on the physical properties of materials. Alloying additions of Sulfur in amounts from 0.10% to 0.30% tend to improve the machinability of steel and are thus resulfurized or freemachining. Therefore, the machinery industry must analyze the content of carbon and sulfur elements, during the material procurement process.

In the Aerospace industry, there is a need for a high specific strength, anti-fatigue, corrosion resistance, long service life, and low-cost materials. The carbon and sulfur analyzer is the most appropriate technique to estimate Carbon and Sulfur in alloy materials for its highest quality and durability.

In the Battery industry, the times of charging and discharging represent an important indicator of battery performance. The precise content of sulfur in the battery directly affects its service life, making it of paramount importance to monitor the sulfur content in them.

In the Geological industry, the content of Carbon and Sulfur in Soil is important for the health, growth of plants, and quality of produce. It is therefore important to monitor the carbon and sulfur contents in the soil accurately. The Carbon and Sulphur analyzer is the most accurate technique for the estimation of Carbon and Sulfur in the soil.

Apart from the above-mentioned Industries, Carbon and Sulfur analysis is also having primary applications for the other major Material Industries:
